Frequently Asked Questions
What does alternative education mean?
Alternative education is a program operated as a subdivision of the regular K-12 program.. It is designed for students who can be better served in an alternative delivery system.. Students served include those who have specific needs and are often at risk of not graduating. Alternative education programs seek to provide added flexibility and alternative instructional models. These often include expanded services from the traditional setting such as online learning, institutional programs, counseling, childcare, and transportation in an effort to help students overcome barriers and meet the goals of the Michigan Merit Curriculum..Alternative education pupils are funded under the K-12 foundation rate. (Michigan Department of Education)
What is your school environment like?
We understand that sometimes the traditional school system doesn't work for a variety of reasons and that sometimes life throws us challenges that are difficult to overcome. At CAP, we take a relational approach to working with students. We believe that the relationships we have with students are just as important as the academics. That being said, it also means that we might be paying more attention to you and your struggles than a traditional school would. We believe in talking through problems and resolving issues in positive, peaceful ways. Many of our students refer to our program as a 'family.'
What is your student population like?
We enroll between 50 and 60 students. Currently, we have students from a variety of surrounding school districts; Charlotte, Eaton Rapids, Fowler, Grand Ledge, Holt, Lansing, and Potterville.
How many teachers/staff do you have and are they MI certified teachers?
We have three full time teachers (Language Arts, Math, Science), one part time Special Education teacher and one part time History teacher. In addition, we have a part time Administrative Assistant and full time Coordinator. All teachers are certified through the state of Michigan.
