Program Information
The Alternative Education Program provides classes for youth, 15 – 19 years old, who have not experienced success in a traditional high school setting. CAP offers smaller classes, more individualized attention from staff, a caring and supportive
learning environment, computer-based instruction, and flexible scheduling. Classroom instruction is based on the Michigan Merit Curriculum and leads to a high school diploma. Potterville High School students must obtain permission (see high school referral form) from the high school principal and/or counselor to enroll in the alternative education program.
Enrollment Criteria for Alternative Education
In order to be enrolled in the alternative program, prospective students must fill out an information form, participate in an interview with the program coordinator and staff and are considered on an individual basis. Some guidelines regarding enrollment are listed below:
• Since this is a high school completion program, students must be able to read at a level of 6th grade or above.
• Students must be able to complete class work and online courses independently with some assistance from the classroom teacher. If it is determined that the student needs one-on-one assistance, another educational option will be recommended.
• Non-resident students with a recent expulsion on their school record will be considered on an individual basis and, if admitted to the program, placed on academic and behavior probation for nine weeks.
• Students with a history of multiple disciplinary incidents will be considered on an individual basis.
